History of the oral piercing: centuries of perforations

Resumen

Introducción: la especie humana tiene una cierta tendencia compulsiva que conduce a la búsqueda de una distinción, como son las perforaciones que en la actualidad aumentan exponencialmente. Quizás deban interpretarse como forma de comunicación, expresión de su identidad o del culto al cuerpo. Objetivo: identificar los antecedentes históricos del piercing, así como los diversos usos de las perforaciones en antiguas civilizaciones. Métodos: se realizó un artículo histórico sobre la historia del piercing oral, en el período comprendido entre enero y septiembre del 2023. Fueron utilizadas las bases de datos: LIS, Medline, Cochrane, Lilacs, SeCiMed, Pudmed, SciELO. Se consultaron 39 artículos que abordaron el tema, tanto en idioma inglés como en español. Se tuvieron en cuenta artículos electrónicos que abordaran los antecedentes del uso del piercing; de ellos se utilizaron 29 como referencias bibliográficas. Se excluyeron aquellos que no dispusieron de texto completo. Conclusiones: resulta imposible establecer en qué momento exacto apareció el piercing en la historia de la humanidad, aunque lo cierto es que su origen es tan antiguo como la misma piel. Por una gran variedad de motivos es un arte antiguo y venerable que en las últimas décadas parece haber emergido de nuevo. Históricamente, el piercing ha existido a lo largo de muchas culturas.

Introduction: The human species has a certain compulsive tendency that drives to the search of a distinction, like they are the perforations that at the present time increase exponentially. They should maybe be interpreted like communication form, like form of expression of their identity or like expression form of the cult to the body. Objective: To identify the historical records of the piercing as well as the diverse uses of the perforations in old civilizations. Methods: He/she was carried out a historical article on the history of the oral piercing, in the understood period between January and September of the 2023. The databases were used: LIS, Medline, Cochrane, Lilacs, SeCiMed, Pudmed, SciELO. 39 articles were consulted that approached the topic, so much in English language as in Spanish. They were kept in mind electronic articles that you/they approached the records of the use of the piercing; of them 26 like bibliographical references were used. Those were excluded that didn’t prepare of complete text. Summations: It is impossible to settle down in what exact moment piercing appeared in the humanity’s history although the certain thing is that its origin is as old as the same skin. For a great variety of reasons it is an old and venerable art that seems to have emerged again in the last decades. Historically, the piercing has existed along many cultures.
