El significado de los términos sincategoremáticos

Resumen

Contra la larga tradición semántica a menudo mantenida por lingüistas y filósofos desde la edad media, se muestra, a partir de categorías de análisis de la semiótica y la lingüistica estructural moderna, que no hay términos sincategoremáticos en el lenguaje natural. Una vez establecida que todo término del lenguaje posee significado en algún universo de referencia, se dan algunos ejemplos de la compleja semántica de los llamados términos «sincategoremáticos», destacando sus significados metalingüísticos y paralingüísticos. Se reseña el aporte de la lógica simbólica a la especificación del significado relacional de algunos términos sincategoremáticos.

Abstract

Against a long tradition in semantics, often maintained by linguists and philosophers alike since the Middle Ages, a demonstration is given, from the standpoint of semiotics and modern structural linguistics, that there arc no syncategorematic terms in natural language. Once it has been established that every term of language has a meaning in some universe of reference, some examples are given as to the complex semantics of the so-called «syncategorematic» terms, emphasizing their metalinguistic and paralinguistic meaning. The contribution of symbolic logic to the specification of the relational meaning of some syncategorematic terms, is mentioned.
