Resumen

La nación yanomama es un grupo indígena aisladoy autosuficiente que reside en la selva lluviosa al sur deVenezuela y norte de Brasil que ha logrado vivir en armoníacon su ambiente y que ha mostrado ancestral respeto a lanaturaleza sin producir basura ni contaminación. Deparanla sal que necesitan de un árbol de la misma regiónllamado Tavarí. El Estudio Intersalt es una investigaciónobservacional que ha demostrado una asociación entrela presión arterial y el consumo de sal de la dieta através de la medición de su excreción urinaria. Loshallazgos encontrados en este grupo poblacional fueronextraordinarios: Niveles de presión arterial muy bajosque no se incrementan con la edad, niveles de colesterolmuy reducidos, ausencia de alcoholismo u obesidad.Constituyen un experimento de la naturaleza digno deseguir; desafortunadamente el mundo occidental ha tenidoun impacto negativo en sus vidas y cultura.

SUMMARY

The nation yanomamo is an isolated and self-sufficientindigenous group who reside in the rainy forest to the southof Venezuela and north of Brazil that has managed to live inharmony with its atmosphere and that has shown ancestralrespect to the nature without producing any sweepings orcontamination. They obtain the salt that needs from a localtree of called Tavarí. The Intersalt Study is an observationalinvestigation that has demonstrated an association betweenthe arterial pressure and the consumption of salt of the dietthrough the measurement of its urinary excretion. Thefindings found in this population group were extraordinary:Very low levels of pressure arterial that are not increasedwith the age, cholesterol levels very reduced, absence ofalcoholism or obesity, very low sodium excretion. Theyconstitute an experiment of the nature worthy to follow;unfortunately western world had much of a negative impacton their lives or culture.
