Post-acute COVID-19 syndrome: A new pandemic?
Keywords:
post-acute COVID-19, coronavirus, complications, sequelae, recuperation.Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has revolutionized the current public health panorama. The acute form of the disease tends to display a primarily respiratory clinical picture. However, not all patients with COVID-19 appear to fully recuperate days to weeks after the acute episode. Increasing evidence supports subacute and long-term effects of COVID-19 in several organs and systems. The term post-acute COVID-19 (COVID-pa) or prolonged COVID has been coined to refer to patients with extended recovery periods. A significant percentage of COVID-19 survivors tend to present with sequelae for up to 6 months, and considering we’re still in early stages of general recovery, these lapses could continue to grow, resulting in chronic conditions. Further research is needed to determine which patients are at risk of presenting these complications after the acute presentation in order to take appropriate preventive measures. The objective of this review is to evaluate key epidemiologic and pathophysiologic aspects of COVID-pa, aiming to facilitate its identification in clinical practice.
