CARACTERISTICAS AGRICOLAS Y DEMOGRÁFICAS DE DOS COMUNIDADES DE AGRICULTORES SOMETIDAS A INFLUENCIA URBANA DE DIFERENTE INTENSIDAD

Abstract

Las comunidades agrícolas de áreas periurbanas sufren con el tiempo reducción del área del cultivo y cambios en la actividad agrícola y tenencia de la tierra. El objetivo del presente estudio fue comparar con base en variables descriptivas de la actividad agrícola y características demográficas dos comunidades agrícolas cercanas a centros urbanos. Se seleccionaron dos grupos de agricultores de comunidades aledañas al denominado Camino de Los Españoles, pero ubicadas en vertientes distintas de la serranía que conforma el Parque Nacional Waraira Repano, en la región central de Venezuela. Los datos fueron obtenidos de una encuesta aplicada a 69 agricultores, 30 de la vertiente norte y 39 de la vertiente sur. Los resultados revelan que en el grupo de la vertiente sur, más cercano al principal centro urbano de la zona, es menor el porcentaje de individuos que han residido en la localidad toda su vida (59% vs 83,3%), así como de los que ejercen la agricultura como oficio exclusivo (54% vs 83%) y cultivan para la venta (71,1% vs 96,6%), pero es mayor el porcentaje de los que han hecho uso definanciamiento agrícola (27% vs 10,3%). La mediana del tamaño de sus terrenos de cultivo es significativamente menor (0,15 ha vs 0,51ha) y el perfil de productos agrícolas del grupo es más heterogéneo. Se argumenta que parte de estas diferencias pueden ser resultado de la mayor influencia urbana a la cual ha estado expuesta la comunidad de la vertiente sur. The objective if this study was to compare, based on variables of agricultural activity and demographic characteristics, two farming communities located closed to urban centers. Two groups of farmers from communities surrounding the so-called Camino de Los Españoles, but located on different hillsides of the mountain that conforms the Waraira Repano National Park, in the central region of Venezuela, were selected. The data were obtained from a survey applied to 69 farmers, 30 of the northern hillside and 39 of the southern hillside. The results reveal that in the group of the southern hillside, nearest to the main urban center of the area, is lower the percentage of individuals who have resided during all his life in the community (59 vs. 83.3%), who practice agriculture as exclusive job (54 vs. 83%) and who produce for sale (71.1 vs. 96.6%), but the percentage with agricultural financing is higher (27 vs. 10.3%). The median size of their farmland is significantly lower (0.15 vs. 0.51 ha) but the profile of agricultural products of this group is more heterogeneous. It is argued that these differences may be the result of the greater urban influence to which the farm community of the southern hillside has been exposed.
